What is a SLUG LINE?

A slug line is a scene heading that gives you a scene’s environment and date. Or the place and time of a scene. It tells you if the scene is interior or exterior. It tells you where it takes place. And it tells you the time it takes place. Slug lines are seen in headings.

A slug line looks like this:

INT. LOCATION – TIME

for example, one of the scenes in the movie takes place in a school sometime around 1966. So the slug line would look like this:

INT. HIGH SCHOOL GYM TEACHER’S OFFICE OTTAWA ONTARIO – AFTERNOON 1966

The next thing takes place outside the gym teacher’s office. That would look the same, except it would say outside the gym teacher’s office. And as we go, the details will fill in. Fun.
